Pets or People?

Do you have any pets? I don't.
Do you like pets? I don't. Not yet.
Would you like to have a pet? Maybe. I think so.
What kind of a pet would you like to have? A dog.

I cannot believe, I just said that! A dog? I am afraid of dogs. Puppies, maybe not. Full grown dogs? Definitely. And yet, last night, as I was pondering over certain people that I have encountered in my life, I realized that I was better off having a dog in my life rather than them. I, also for the first time, did not laugh or feel sorry about these so called "lonely Americans who buy Get Well Soon greeting cards for their sick pet".

I have never had a pet but heard many stories, especially of dogs. And as I write this blog, I realize..

  • A dog will never not answer your call because he or she is not in the mood, busy with his or her significant other, or has his or her phone on silent.
  • A dog will never not answer the door because he or she is asleep, is screening visitors, or still at work.
  • A dog will never laugh at you, ask you to "get over it", or get bored of listening to your problems over and over again.
  • A dog will never cheat on you, lie to you, or break your trust.
  • A dog will never go "bitch" (no pun intended!) about you behind your back.
  • A dog will never tell you that you need to lose weight or get your eyebrows done or get a face lift.
  • A dog will never hit you, or abuse you.
  • A dog will never fuss over the food that you have cooked.
  • A dog will not change overnight and dump you!
  • A dog will always feel sad when you are sad and be happy when you are happy.
  • A dog will always be loyal to you.
  • A dog will always go shopping with you if you wanted him or her to.
  • A dog will sleep next to you if you want him or her to, whether or not you have had a fight with him or her.
  • A dog will always..............be there for you!
And so, the next time I switch apartments, I am going to rent a pet-friendly one. And buy myself a friend who will always be my friend. Any advice for a first-timer? BTW, I do know that barking dogs seldom bite!

hmmm first timer...pehle toh great decision :)
i remember having three dogs at one point in time...loved having my pals around...me was a lil kid, my bro was better frnds with all three of em.
anyways as far as advice goes just pick a breed that you'll be able to handle, as in cook for, take out, bathe and take care of.
and if i have to recommend someone to talk to... www.shamannicdreams.blogspot.com is the place to go to :), she has some 15 dogs at her farmhouse...will guide better

I love dogs..and they are the most trustworthy creatures on this planet.
They will give you a lot of love, thats for sure but it is also require a lot of responsibility. And thats still not the kind of love we want, though at some moments exactly what you need :)

*** lonely Americans who buy Get Well Soon greeting cards for their sick pet: They do? Surprised that the manufacturer of such cards actually thought of catering to sucha market, acually hit upon an idea of selling such cards. Interesting!

hey there
Nice blog! I have one HUGE piece of advice...NEVER BUY a dog...ADOPT one. Go to www.petfinder.com when you get a chance. There are 1000s of animals listed there, who are in need of a home. You can adopt a pet for a quarter of the price of pets that are sold at pet stores, or from breeders. Please, I cannot stress on this enough,,,DO NOT SUPPORT dog breeders. Its a shame that there are people out there that prefer to buy dogs from breeders, just so that they can have a 'pure breed' dog, when they could be providing a loving home for 4 dogs for the price of 1. Thats my two cents worth of advice.

I love dogs. Had a lazapso (a Tibetian breed) for a while. Named HER 'snowy' from tintin et al:) Sweet memories. They do all that you've said but can never ever ever replace the ones you so dearly love even with all their faults! Be it friends or someone more... Also it is a huge responsibility! u up for it?

@ hammett, its going to take a long time before I get one but its under serious consideration!

@ ceedy, you dont want human pets?? what does that mean?

@ Darshini, thanks!! Need this kind of advice. Dont even know where to start. Will ask you more when the time is right!

Solitaire said...

@ Preethi, Correct me if I am wrong..but isnt it just like having a child?

@ Alameen, One day...

@ Jeevy, I am like you. I once bought two goldfish and managed to kill them within a few days by overfeeding them. But I am serious considering this.

I've been around dogs almost all my life and recently adopted a new puppy. I'd be happy to talk to you more about this when you are ready.
I've emailed you my boy's website. Check it out when you get a chance.

Hi Solitaire,
Your post is a bit alarming to say the least. It's as if a dog is better than a human friend for companionship. You must have so many sad and painful memories with your acquaintances. Just a bit of unsolicited advice from a friend. Just be yourself. Don't get affected with what others say. What's important is that you are living your life the way you want it to be. Don't live your life based on other people's expectations. You'll never get happy that way. We were created by God for a purpose. Learn that purpose and live a happy and fulfilled life. Thanks for the interesting post. God bless and have a wonderful and pleasant day in the US always.

@ Darshini, saw the pics and he looks so cute!

@ Mel, sadly, at this point, I seriously feel that unconditional love can be given only by an animal.

@ lostweasley, :) Are you going to get one?

@ v_h@ stories like these make me want a dog!

Solitaire said...

@ KP, and so do babies who poop and pee!! :) Wish they came out with doggy diapers!

@ Eagleharry, I remember Sultan! :)

@ Badshah, neither am I. I will think about it seriously, though.

and a dog will never say "get a hold on your life" when he actually would know exactly he is the reason for me having lost it....

@ Jeevy, wow!! Nice to know someone is worse than me!

@ Preethi, good point.

@ Pavi, when I need a human to talk to, I will call someone so that I can hang up on them when I am fed up.
BTW, I saw your blog today. Welcome back!

@ Adorable pancreas, each to his own right?

@ Art, O-H? You mean an exclamation or the state?

Solitaire said...

@ Cosmic, just like women are referred to as bitches?

@ Lost weasley, when is your birthday?

Cosmic Joy said...

That was not where I was going with my comment. What I was referring to was that nothing can replace human companionship .. and some men are like the dogs with the qualities you listed ..

. said...

O-H as in you're supposed to say I-O!

Pavi!!!! said...

Yes..U can call a friend..but its never the same as having sum1 u can hug WITH U...
I'm wit Cosmic Joy on this....nothing can replace Human Relationships - The good n bad of it!

Thanks for the comment on my blog :-)
