Dejavu..

Do you have over 20 pairs of shoes, a closet overflowing with clothes, and 4 vip bags full of more clothes that did not fit into the closet? And yet, do you look at your clothes each morning and let out a sigh while saying, "I dont have anything good to wear!"?

This is a repost but apt to be published again. Ten days ago (when those dreaded floods turned my life topsy turvy), I realized that I fell into this category of girls described above. The number of clothes in my possession overwhelmed me as I cleaned out my closet in frustration. I came across something I bought in 1995 that looks hideous in 2008. I am proud to say that it used to fit me up until last year. Perhaps, one of the reasons I never threw it away!! Maybe I was waiting for a day that I would outgrow it (today is the day!) and hence have a "valid" reason to chuck it instead of merely being bored with it, and thus be in the danger of looking like someone with whimsical tastes and a lot of money to spare and spend.

And as I spent the entire week unfolding and folding the huge mountain of clothes, I realized that there are some garments that I bought just for the heck of them being on sale and had never worn them, while there were some that I had held on to with the hope that I would one day be "thin" enough to look good in them. Needless to say, that point of satisfaction has still not come and they still remain new with labels on them.

Well, the 4 VIP bags have now been reduced to 1. And the wardrobe that was once overflowing is now quite open to newer clothes. What an irony!! Guilt laden, I think of the number of rupees and dollars spent on these clothes, and how I could perhaps use this money today towards the gas that my car guzzles each week these days. Thank God for Salvation Army (who accepted 8 trash bags yesterday from yours truly) that accepts donations. At least, I know that these clothes will be put to good use as opposed to being used as a mop for the kitchen floor.

Now let's start talking about the shoes and the handbags..(or maybe not)!! I guess, by now, you must have an idea. Are you one of those girls too (or in the company of one of those girls)? Any Carrie Bradshaws reading this article and wanting to rave about the number of Manolo Blahniks they have!!?

hmm... no carrie bradshaw me.. so no manolos... but yes, over 30 pairs of footwear.. *had to leave another 30 or so pairs back home coz of weight restrictions*...
a walk-in closet, the size of my kitchen; and still i've to borrow space in V's closet. and of course, junk jewelery, which i rarely wear... handbags, belts et al... add to that, my maasi's coming next week, with another bagful of stuff! YAY!! wait, should i even be cheering to that...?
in my defense, i fit into all the clothes still... so there's scope that i may wear them someday...
and yes, everytime i've got to go out, i still have nothing to wear! :(

umm... on the poll there... i'd have chosen, "i know i am beautiful, and i don't care if it fits anybody's stereotype of beauty"
but it doesn't exist. so i shall not vote! :0)

100 pairs and counting, girl :) Wish I could attach a pic to this comment, my shoe-closet just got done, and took pics to send to my sisters. Unfortunately the closet can only hold half of 'e. I need a shoe-room :( And a bag-room. And a belts-room. And a coat-room. And a...maybe we'll just build a small house in our backyard for my stuff to live in!

Will comment on two posts at once -

regarding last one - since it is a repost - just a question - do you feel beautiful within....that is more important than how you are perceived

and I use vicco vajradanti even today :P

and regarding this post - well all I can say remember this time when you shop again......

I am sorta minimalist so dont end up collecting much.....people see it as miserly but I try to put money to other good uses....that I dont disclose :)

@ Tuhin, its for women. You wanna join? And YESSSSSSS, I want that phone number. Maybe we need to talk in a more private area. What say?

@ Rayshma, Same pinch about the shoes! Closet is too small for me and hence, that limits my purchases. Enjoy your new stuff next week!!

Solitaire said...

@ Aneri, 100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What are you saying? Since birth or currently? So tell me the average price of each pair..I know Carrie Bradshaw once calculated that she had spent enough money to be able to buy a condo or something!!

@ Ghost, you don't need any lessons from me. You will figure it out.

Solitaire said...

@ Ceedy, I would rather people appreciate me for who I am and what I have achieved rather than come up to me and say, "oh you are soo beautiful!"

BTW, I use Vicco Turmeric, not Vajradanti. :)

And as for shopping less, student life has kinda taken care of that but I do not know what's going to happen this August onwards. Same story all over again and a new post next year, same time!

Solitaire said...

@ Neeku, you know what? I filled two big boxes (Dell computer boxes) with my purses and bags. :)

@ Keshi, haha! I know your obsession about shoes.

@ Macadamia, if you do not repent it then don't put a sad face there...Enjoy it!

Solitaire said...

@ Pavi, come borrow mine. I have two BIG (big is an understatement) boxes full of handbags. And shoes is another story.

@ Samby, sahi hai. Mom log bhi yeh category mein hai!

@ Maverick, tujhe bada pata hai! :p

Solitaire said...

@ Veens, instinct, genes, gender..all these are associated with shopping. Don't worry too much.

@ Little boxes, hah..never thought about it this way. Should tell my mom about it. She has turned many clothes into mops.

@ Rohit, realllly? Aamir Khan movies too!?

Solitaire said...

@ Elusive, OMG me too! Lots and lots and lots of jewellery. So much that I forgt what I have and end up never wearing anything. And then everytime I move apartments, I invariably end up losing my earrings. :(

@ Sam, I dunno! Ask the males! Is 10-11 pairs of shoes for a guy too much?

Solitaire said...

@ Cinderella, don't worry. You are not alone. Talk talk...

@ Ria, how did this parivartan come? And if mom takes the ban off, what will you do? Be back to your old self?

I have a bad habit! I find it really hard to throw my clothes away despite not wearing them at all. I juz have this whole silly idea on how i might find them useful again someday. Which i usually don't. lol, New ones are juz too saucy to go back to old ones! But yeah silly mentality of mine! lol.

But i am grateful for the times when i do pack up bag fulls of clothes to give away. =)

The one thing my mum can't stand is me keeping my old shoes! She juz feels i should throw them away if i am not using rather than take up more storage space. In fact i got a problem with throwing most of my things. *BLUSH* yeah... :P

Have a good day there Solitiare.;D

CHEERS!

What a topic! A rich Gujju girl gloating over her wardrobe and giving away four bags full of unwanted dresses to the Salvastion army. How many of us in India live a life like that? I rememeber I had only two sets of shorts and shirts when I was of school going age. And when I started working, on a pittance, I had four pairs of pants and shirts. Times are a-changing and how !!!
