Words

Words help us communicate. Words help us feel. Words help us think. Words help us live. Words are those groups of letters without which our life is very hard. Words act like magic. You think of something, you form a sentence, you express them and voila...there is a reaction to them.

The words in a great book can move us to tears. The words in a melodious song can create a wave of emotions. The words in a well-scripted movie can remain etched in our minds.

Unfortunately, harsh words created in an agitated mind can pierce our hearts like daggers. Even more unfortunate is that many of us live with bleeding hearts waiting for someone to come lick our wounds and nurse us. We rant, we cry, we crib, we bitch, we yell, we shout, we scream, we cuss, we mock, we accuse, we judge, all in a desperate plea for help.

Why? Because we are hurt. Because we relied on others for OUR self-worth. Because we gave them the right to control our emotions. Because we are insecure with ourselves. Because we think someone else is better than us. Because we think we do not have it in us. Because we believe them.

The truth is...YOU, I, Him, and Her. we all are unique. I have my own set of fingerprints that you don't. I have a face that you don't. You have a fashion style that I don't. You have a writing style that I don't. He has a thought process that I don't. She has a talent that I don't. That is the ultimate truth. I am special. You are exception. You are you. I am me. And so are they, they. Together, we add diversity, beauty, and variety to this world. That is the ultimate truth.

So when they try and put you down, realize that you are worthy of much more and beyond. When someone says, "I hate you", realize that you love yourself. When someone says, "You are mean!", realize that you are different from what they want you to be. When someone says, "You suck!", realize that that does not necessarily make them a better person. When someone lies about you, it does not necessarily become the eternal truth. You know it. And last of all, realize that these are words that were created in someone else's mind. You do not have to believe these words and bring your self-respect down.

"Don't let those prickers bother you", says A mother of two....

You are special and you know it. If you did not, now you do. All that you need to do now is remember it. ALWAYS.

I agree with every WORD u said here Sol. BUT it's so much more easier said than done. WORDS r very powerful. I so believe in the pen being mightier than the sword. Hence, verbal bullets can hurt and scar us much more than a gun can.

Some people remain scarred all their lives cos of one WORD a loved-one may hv uttered. Why? Cos WORDS somehow manage to pierce the very being in us..the very core of the HEART.

If u hv a heart, there's no way u can walk away not feeling hurt by harsh WORDS.

True that we hv to pick up ourselves and move on, but the echoes of those WORDS dun leave that easily.

@ Rakesh,

You are right. This world is full of competitions, rivalry, jealousy, comparisons. As children, grownups compare us to other kids. As adults, we begin comparing ourselves to others. People should realize that we all are unique in our own special way and that two people do not have to be alike.

Solitaire said...

@ Knatchbulley,

Me fantastic. You?

Absolutely AGREE with what your mom's words. Have noticed that ALL the time. I wish people would live and let live. Jealousy only hurts them the most and not the one they are jealous of.

Very well written ... just hope that these WORDS of yours comfort a few who might have been at the receiving end of some harsh words ...

Precisely ... in fact that makes him an even low person ...if he can just come out and ridicule someone with such statements (more so in public) .. but then this again is my point of view ... and as you rightly hit the bullseye ... watever one says is their perception and understanding of the usage of that word ...

*applauds*..great post,Sol. I can see that u're going to make a great psychologist. Yes,words help us communicate, live, think,et al..as Keshi points out,the pen IS mightier than the sword, and a verbal onslaught can hurt like no real weapon can.

So,isn't it our own resilience in such situations which gets tested? And,with each such verbal diatrabe, shouldn't we be getting more and more immune to future duels?

Yes,we should,I did, but, occasionally, even I tend to get bogged down by such verbal duels, which make me feel totally zapped out. Even putting oneself in the other person's shoes to understand why they said what they did, does not work! So,what's the answer? You said it.'You are special and you know it' should be our mantra!!

Vinz said...

Words... As you rightly said 'words help us feel'.

Words when spoken is something we cant take back. And the usage of proper words do matters.(one of my friend says Sagi's get into trouble with their words and talkings..what they say wont what others percieve...) And i dont know, i had come accross such incidents many a times..

I still wish i havent had used certain words while talking..!!

'Words Help Us Feel' - Good & Bad..

Nice Post..

Keshi said...

I hardly think ppl r jealous of me cos I dun hv anything MORE or BETTER than the rest.

Well, All I can say is it depends on the strength of our heart, some fall easily infront of a rain of words, some hold on and some fight back and survive.

Vishesh said...

in a way it easy for me to think i am special than others...for my name is vishesh :) i know what u mean...i hate to tell someone they suck...but then the world is harsh...and you it is not about u ..it is abt ppl who want to hurt you...but well the world sees you the way ,you see yourself...

Solitaire said...

@ Aneesh,

Very true. And where can this strength come from? When you love yourself, you become stronger. And sharp words will take longer to deter you. Well said.

Mansi Trivedi said...

Very true! I was always one of those who would dread over a harsh word for days and days. I would feel so bad and my facebook, gtalk status would be affected too ;)
but gotta change and am taking on that challenge of thickening my skin, slowly but surely!

Solitaire said...

@ Keshi,

I think you are mistaken. This is not a jealousy post. This is a "harsh words" post. Jealousy could be a "subdivision" of it just like other emotions such as hatred, anger, disgust, etc.

Why do I ALWAYS think people are jealous of me?

Where did THAT come from? I do not remember saying that in the post!

Solitaire said...

@ Vinz,

Welcome to my blog!

This is precisely what I am talking about. Words can scar and hurt and make one feel bad. And if that person's heart is weak, they may be hurt very bad and not survive. There are many reasons for a heart being weak but I think one can make it stronger on their own by loving themselves and not having their self-worth depend on anyone else's perception about them.

So it seems you are at the other end..not at the receiving end but the giving end, huh? Maybe one day, will write a post about that.

Rho Tau GWIS said...

Nicely written Solitaire!

**When someone lies about you, it does not necessarily become the eternal truth. **

So true!! But sadly, there are people out there in this world who are willing to believe the 'lies' of others, without searching for the real truth. Why do they do that?

As a psychologist, I'm sure you are familiar with 'Projection'. Sometimes, when people say harsh words to others, they are simply being projectionists. They are insecure about themselves and therefore they try to put others down, to make themselves feel better. I feel sorry for such people.

You know what they say, 'What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger!'
So keep going girl!

Solitaire said...

@ Carolinagal,

You read my mind girl. I have been thinking about projection all along!! But wanted to refrain from using too much jargon on psychobabble. That's what The WOES are for. :) Speaking of that, am coming up with a personality disorder series there. Please vote for the one you would like to know more about.

About lies, I truly believe based on past experiences that the truth reveals itself in some form or the other. So one should not worry too much about that. One should only focus one's energy on standing strong until that moment arrives.

Easier said than done. But NOT impossible. :)

Thanks CG!

Neetal said...

This is like Neosporin on a little cut in my heart(I got last weekend... !)

Solitaire said...

@ Keshi,

Its all a matter of making your heart stronger. It is a world where "survival of the fittest" has always mattered. The wounds will hurt, no doubt, and scars might remain, but does not necessarily have to make one's self worth go down. Yes it is easier said than done. BUT definitely not impossible.

Solitaire said...

@ Neeku,

You are welcome ben. Anytime! :)

WOW! That puts a smile on my face.

***So,isn't it our own resilience in such situations which gets tested?

Yes, and that is what this post is aimed at. Building one's resilience WITHOUT more verbal duels. Because, as you said, verbal duels bog one down. Especially, when you are attacked without any valid reasons.

So go follow the mantra!

Thank you!! Neekuben said it acted like Neosporin. :)

***Precisely ... in fact that makes him an even low person ...if he can just come out and ridicule someone with such statements (more so in public)

You are right. When people try and throw dirt at others in public, they do not realize that they are getting their hands dirty too. Wise people say na, "tu kharab bol kar apni zubaan kyon kadvi kar rahi hai?"

***watever one says is their perception and understanding of the usage of that word ...

Correct again! When people hurt us with their words, we need to remember that they understand those words differently and our understanding need not be the same.

Solitaire said...

@ Lukky,

@ Ghost,

It is such an irony. Mankind is the most intelligent species and yet we abuse and misuse the gifts of speech that we have received. We tend to use our WORDS to SCAR rather than to HEAL, to create TEARS than SMILES, to express MALICE than LOVE. Then we complain that life is not easy. We bring it upon ourselves. I wonder during such times, if it would have been better to be born as a dog that would be lovingly raised by a master and be oblivious to the meanings of those harsh words.

Your comment was very deep.

devolving the ability for free speech, and self expression will either make us animals or just a stump on the side of the road. But even animals have self expression. And they dont fake it. I think a lot of people know what they want but they eventually get it, they don't want it anymore. Hence, the hurt. But what about WORDS?

Solitaire said...

@ Aqua,

Thanks girl! Words can mean so much and convey so much..right..but sometimes they convey things that should have stayed within.

Anu said...

I wish you could see me now, I am standing up and clapping. A good friend was terribly mean to me , which she later apologized for. But the words she said, still ring in my ears, each a spear in its own right. As she vented, she felt better, but as I heard, I shrunk back in horror. It took me sometime, to realize, that she was the one with the problem.
But a look in the mirror solves the problem, each person who know they are, and anothers validation, though nice, is not an absolute necessity

Maybe its the result of late night hour at the end of busy day, but this heavy duty post (like most others by gujjuben) is yet to begin sinking inside my head.
But the above statement by Keshi really takes the prize.

'uniquely' and 'all equal' !

Stupidosaur said...

Anyways when someone says "You Suck!", just look straight in the eye and say "Of course I do! What do YOU do instead? CHEW on your Soda?

Stupidosaur said...

When someone says
"You are mean!"

Just say
"Of course I am the average kinda next-door-neighbour person, and gladly so! Not like you, the Grand Dictator of Banana Republic of Timbuktoo! Hah!"

And in case the person does not get it and looks at you like the sugar-deficient-banana-starved-monkey-of-the-dictator-republic (reading this, dont look at the screen like the very thing that improvised word is supposed to mean), then please go on to explain that 'mean' means 'average'

We shouldn't let others get to us! :) Because we know who we are! The rest of the world be damned! :D

A wonderful choice of words to express sumthing so meaningful.Very well-said.

It is words that gets us all happy at words n it is words that hurt us at other times.

In anger one has no control over the venom they spit...but if one doesn't look back n feel sorry over getting all worked up n acting so petty,n saying mean things n spreading so much negative energy it truly is thier own loss! Your success lies in keeping mum, not retaliating, being mature and behaving like the better person does.

Ankur said...

I agree to you with most of it, Agree to the part where u talk abt words, but the kind of worthiness u r talkin abt is emotional and not logical, and when there are emotions involved, ppl are bound to hurt!!!

**Because we are hurt. Because we relied on others for OUR self-worth. Because we gave them the right to control our emotions

We didnt relied on others for our self-worth, we relied on others for emotions, for feelings, for love, and how do u relate it all to self worth i would really like to know coz may be i m missing the obvious here!!!

It takes time for everyone to recover and come out of it, some do it in a day and some take months... we cant neither justify or quantify the love nor can we say that the person who came out early understands her self worth more!!!

Time is a perfect healing which goes with words, some relationships end without sayin a word, without a fight... emotions play there and coz u understand the other person well u know what she wants!!!

We all may be unique but we all have most in common, which is the pool of emotions, we may behave differently because the degree of emotions is a subjective terms and then we can never equate 2!!!

For me, i m not disillusioned from d world coz i m hurt with words, but surely words can help me heal!!! :)

Cheers!!!!

Solitaire said...

@ Ankur,

****when there are emotions involved, ppl are bound to hurt!!!

No doubt that people will hurt. My point is, do not rely on others to heal. You can learn to love yourself and heal too.

****We didnt relied on others for our self-worth, we relied on others for emotions, for feelings, for love, and how do u relate it all to self worth i would really like to know coz may be i m missing the obvious here!!!

As I read your entire comment, I am absolutely positive that you and I are talking about different things completely. You have interpreted this post in a fashion not intended to be.

I am not talking about LOVE from others here. I am talking about self-esteem. I am talking about people who cannot see themselves in a good light unless others do. Or begin thinking of themselves in a bad light because someone threw dirt at them.

****For me, i m not disillusioned from d world coz i m hurt with words, but surely words can help me heal!!! :)

So glad for that! Since you are that kind of a person, I am pretty positive that you will also refrain from hurting other people with your words. Heal the world!

True!! They say that anger is one letter short of DANGER. When angry, people get hasty and impulsive and we know that HASTE MAKES WASTE.

***Your success lies in keeping mum, not retaliating, being mature and behaving like the better person does.

Good one! They say that when you point a finger at someone, realize that there are three pointing at yourself. I don't want three pointing at me! :)

Solitaire said...

@ Anindita,

****We should stop living because of them! We should start living for ourselves!

I think that you meant we should NOT stop living because of them. :)

****We shouldn't let others get to us! :) Because we know who we are! The rest of the world be damned! :D

Its not easy. But that definitely should be the motto! Anyway, no pains, no gains!

Hi Solitaire, really loved your post :)
Words make belief, and change beliefs. They control and change our temperaments, and our nature. Words have been the cause for supremacy of a country/region, and later been the cause for its own downfall. Words cultivate hatred and at the same time, it serves as the balm to soothe it. Words either spread or they confine, they never get eliminated. Words bring two people together for eternity, or they corece them to separate.

Enjoyed your post :)
